When Career Compass began on its journey, connecting with professionals and potential collaborators presented a daunting challenge. The prospect of cold-emailing or messaging esteemed adults felt intimidating—would they respond, let alone express interest in our endeavor?
Fortunately, the College and Career Center (CCC) at Saratoga High School, led by the gracious coordinator Brad, emerged as a supportive advisor. We reached out to explore collaboration opportunities, envisioning weekly meetings during tutorial and seeking guidance on organizing school-wide events. Brad's instrumental role allowed Career Compass to flourish, leveraging the CCC's resources to expand our reach within the school community via the Friday Newsletter and fostering connections with fellow educators.
Here are some key takeaways from our experience:
1. Reach Out with Confidence
Overcome hesitation and fear of rejection by approaching interactions with confidence. While it may seem daunting initially, most individuals are approachable and receptive to assisting young minds in their pursuits. Don't underestimate the power of reaching out for help—kindness often exceeds expectations.
2. Be Clear and Concise
Whether in-person or via email, ensure your message is concise and easily comprehensible. Capture attention promptly and elaborate on your mission, goals, and the mutual benefits of collaboration. Articulate communication leaves a lasting impression and fosters meaningful engagement
3. Showcase Your Enthusiasm
Personalize your outreach by expressing genuine admiration for the individual's work and how it resonates with your mission. Authentic enthusiasm establishes rapport and encourages meaningful connections rooted in shared passion.
4. Offer Mutual Benefits
Emphasize the reciprocal advantages of collaboration, highlighting how participation contributes to both parties' interests and goals. Mutual benefits foster a sense of partnership and underscore the value of collective efforts.
5. Persistence Pays Off
I've DMed or messaged people asking for help or if they're interested and been ghosted more times than responded to. The majority of the time, networking may seem like a discouraging and pointless route. However, the key is to NOT take it personally! People are busy with their own projects and lives, so they may just need a kind nudge or reminder of your message. Through following up politely and expressing your continued interest in connecting, your next notification may be the one you've been waiting for :)
Our collaboration with Brad has not only enhanced our project but also taught us valuable lessons about networking. Remember, you'll never know how someone will respond until you take that first step.
